Often referred to as “The Hendrix of the Sahara”, Vieux Farka Touré was born in Niafunké, Mali in 1981. He is the son of legendary Malian guitar player Ali Farka Touré, who died in 2006. With his recent collaborations and performance before a billion people —yes, you read that right—at the 2010 World Cup in Johannesburg, South Africa, Vieux Farka Touré is one of the most celebrated African guitarists in history. Toure's latest album 'Samba', is already being hailed by critics as Vieux's finest, most well-rounded and mature album to date.https://www.dspshows.com/event/1691246/
When the producers of the Woodstock Sessions, a hybrid/live recording series in Saugerties, NY, asked Malian guitarist and vocalist Vieux Farka Touré to stop by in 2015, he didn’t have enough time to make it happen. Intrigued, he promised to return the following year. Making good on his word, the result of that incredible session is now Touré’s newest album, Samba (Six Degrees Records).
Instead of reinvigorated takes on old material, the ten songs on Samba are all brand new. Given Touré’s natural musical curiosity, the far-reaching blend of Malian blues and praise song, funk, reggae, and rock make this his most mature, well-rounded effort to date. The live element, where Touré excels as a performer, shines through on every track, even though the band stopped whenever they wanted to change something up. This was not your average performance.
Always a fan of live music and nightlife, and a student of what inspired the masses to dance, sing, jump and smile... an unlikely move to Cleveland, OH began my career as a club and event DJ. With a technical foundation in vinyl from indie hip hop labels and the vaults of the radio station, the transition to honing mixing, blending and scratching skills was a natural one. Gigs at house parties quickly turned into playing host to sold out concerts for artists like Mac Miller, and spinning alongside local heroes like Terry Urban and MICK (Boogie) at their legendary "I Got 5 On it Party".
The next frontier was planning, promoting and putting on my own events. This began with an annual tribute and fundraiser to honor the legacy of lauded producer/emcee J Dilla. With a sold out first year, the event quickly blossomed into partnerships with The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, American Apparel, Stones Throw Records and many local artists and businesses.
Opportunities have only continued to open from there. I have been blessed to DJ at museums, universities, sweaty basements, repurposed barns and alongside personal heroes. From legendary venues like Manhattan's Sway Lounge, New Orleans' The Saint, Philadelphia's World Cafe Live, and Cleveland's Grog Shop and the SXSW festival in Austin, TX to the beaches of Jamaica... Throughout all of this, the values that defined those early radio shows have endured. My goal is to connect people through the power of great music, and the rest usually works itself out from there.
